Agricultural Biotechnology

At present we are proud to say we have the know-how the following products:

Biopesticide production

Feed production from Agricultural waste
SCP production
Production of Biofertilizers
Revival of saline and desert lands using Biopolymer superwater absorbant and biosaline agriculture,  Biofertilizer, Mycorrhizae

Laboratory and pilot plant production of Fusarium spp. for Biocontrol of broom-rape in sunflower, tomato & tobacco field.

Pilot product of Bacillus thuringiensis serotype 3a3b was used against of forest pest and corn,
sugar beet, rice, and sugar cane lipidopteran pests.

Pilot product of Verticillium lecani was used againt of apphids of tobacco and citrus trees.

The pilot plant of Biotechnology Center produces two ton of bioinsecticide per annum.

Various agricultural waste with enough cellulotic material have been used for single cell protein production as feed for animal.

Citrus peel:
In this project the pigments & pectins have been extracted from citrus peel the remaining       was used as a substrate for single cell protein production.
Algae:
Algae fermented by Halophyte microorganisms for production of SCP

The microbial solubilizer formation.

Biofertilizer from agricultural waste using solid state fermentation.
Biofertilizer from Pistachio peels.

1- Water absorbing biopolymer:
Advantages of the water absorbing polymer from MH-1 bacteria isolated from Iran is listed as below:

i-Absorption ability of 550-700 times of its original weight.

ii- Water retention time of one month up to the temperature of 75°C.

iii- Acts as a salt filters and stabilizes the soils surrounding the roots to be suitable for plant growth.

iv- The polymer along with is accompanying cells act as water absorbing biological fertilizer, which will not only fertilize the soil but also provide the required water of the plant.

v- It is not toxic to human, animals and the environment.

vi- It is not toxic to the soil microorganisms.

vii- Improves the fertility and porosity of the soil and enhances biological and natural metabolism of the soil. Moreover, it does prevent soil respiration and gas exchange activities.

viii- Production cost per kilogram of the polymer in pilot scale is 6.5 $US. On the basis of obtained results, the produced polymer was investigated in various parts of salty land using different formulations. Valuable results were obtained.

2- Mycorrhriza

Mycorrhizas occur in the majority of plants. The formation of mycorrhizas leads to improved uptake of nutrients by the host plant; Benefits to the plant, in addition to improve uptake of nutrients particularly phosphate and water, include increased protection from certain pathogens.

On the basis of studies in desert area of Iran, from the plants in these areas a no. 15 types of

Glomus and Sclerocystis ectomycorrhiza fungi were isolated, produced and the field studies

implemented on the basis of the above said isolates.

3- Biofertilizers from the agricultural wastes

The agricultural waste is about 10 million tons annually, out of which large amount wil be burn degraded part from these the Oman Sea and Persian Gulf algae plays a important role in production of various vitamins and inorganic material and hence they can be a very good source of biofertilizers.

The knowledge of biofertilizers in Biotechnology Center of Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology is quite familiar and the know how of various biofertilizers formulation is available.

The Biosaline Agriculture
More than ninety per cent of the world’s water is seawater and more than half the world’s

groundwater supplies are saline and the proportion is increasing as demand for water outstrips

supply. Salinity limits crop production.

1- Tissue culture of different crops and selection of high salty tolerate cultivar.

2- Using of super water absorbent biopolymer and biofertilizer from algae and    seawater irrigation are applied in the Persian Gulf coastline with success.
